A visit to a national park can be extremely comfortable—a scenic drive for example—or crazy adventurous, as in a long mountain trek—and everything in between. Whatever you like to do, there is some adventure travel gear that, I think, is absolutely unmissable on any national parks trip.

Essential National Park Adventure Travel Gear

I always encourage people to get outside, leave the comfort of their cars behind, and really experience a landscape.

Smell the air, feel the dirt, listen to birds, curse the rain, praise the sun.

In order to do that, you need some basic outdoor gear. Below, I’ve listed some absolutely necessary stuff that you’ll need for a hiking and camping adventure in a national park.

Camping

There’s no better way to experience and get to know a place than camping. Whether it’s in a tent or a hammock, sleeping outdoors gives you a much better understanding of and appreciation for a particular environment. Also, campfires!

Winterial Single Person Bivy TentSmall, portable and lightweight tent for camping in all conditions and on all terrains.
Winner Outfitters Double Camping HammockMy Pick – Fantastic two-person hammock, great for sleeping under the stars or lazing in your backyard.
TETON Sports +20F Mummy Sleeping BagComfortable and cozy sleeping bag that’ll keep you warm in temperatures down to 20°F (-7°C).
ALPS Mountaineering Featherlite Air Pad Extremely lightweight and packable inflatable sleeping pad. Won’t take up any space in your backpack.
Petzl Tikka Headlamp   A good headlamp is an essential part of any adventure travel gear kit. This is one of the best you’ll find.
ProHealth Titanium 3-Piece Cooking Set No meal tastes as good as the one cooked at your campsite after a long hike. Highly recommended, lightweight cooking set.
Coleman Bottle Top Propane Stove You can’t cook without fire! Coleman is the classic propane stove brand, can’t go wrong with this one.
Light My Fire BPA-Free Spork 4-Pack Nothing more convenient than a lightweight BPA-free spork to get that delicious food in your mouth.
Eagle CreekToiletry Organizer   Wonderful toiletry organizer with several pockets and a tiny mirror. The handy hook lets you hang it up on a tree branch or inside your tent.

Hiking

Nothing compares to hiking when it comes to exploring a landscape. It’s the most natural human activity, after all. People literally evolved to walk (on two legs). You all know that it’s by far my favorite thing to do.

Deuter Quantum 70+10   Spacious backpack for long-distance hikes and other backpacking adventures. Ideal for camping, too.
Deuter Giga Daypack   I use this backpack for both day hikes and regular day-to-day activities. Serves as both a hiking backpack and laptop/ work backpack.
Hiker Hunger Carbon Fiber Trekking Poles Once you’ve used hiking poles, you’ll look back. Provides stability on descents, two extra “legs” on ascents, and speed on flat surfaces.
KEEN Men’s Targhee II Hiking Boots   Excellent pair of hiking boots for rough and rocky terrain. Great ankle support, lightweight and waterproof.
Adidas Men’s AX2 Hiking Shoes     My Pick – Superb hiking shoes for short and long hikes. Extremely lightweight, great traction and just overall awesome.
Nalgene 48oz Silo BPA-Free Water Bottle An essential part of any hiking gear kit, a good BPA-free water bottle is a “must” on any adventure.

Miscellaneous

Besides camping and hiking equipment, there is some other adventure travel gear that usually comes in very handy.  Consider bringing the following items with you when you’re off on a national park adventure.

Kijaro Dual Lock Portable Camping ChairObviously this is not something you’re taking with you on a multi-day trek, but a camping chair is definitely useful when car camping.
Outdoor Products 3-Piece Dry Sack SetIn the spirit of “better safe than sorry”, it’s a good idea to keep your valuables and electronics in a dry sack. You never know when a storm hits and this’ll keep your stuff dry.
Victorinox Swiss Army Pocket Knife My Pick – One of the most essential adventure travel gear items, a Swiss army knife is arguably the greatest, most useful tool to have when hiking and camping.

Photography

Although this is obviously not something that’s absolutely necessary for an adventure, it’s always nice to be able to capture your experiences and exploits, wildlife you encounter and landscapes you stumble upon.

Canon EOS Rebel T6i DSLR Body   Although this is not the most high-end DSLR, it does its job more than properly. Super-high resolution, easy to use and relatively light.
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II SLR Lens My go-to lens for landscape photography, useful for both wide angles and basic zoom.
Canon EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM LensA zoom lens is unmissable, an absolute necessity to photograph wildlife and landscape details.

Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless 24.3MP SLR Camera w/ 16-50mm Power Zoom Lens This is my backup camera, lightweight and tiny but creates images of very high quality.

ZoMei Z818 Lightweight Magnesium/Aluminum TripodEvery self-respecting photographer owns at least one tripod.
Joby Gorillapod Flexible TripodSmall, flexible tripod for weird angles and stuff.

58MM Complete Lens Filter Accessory Kit

A filter kit including UV filter, circular polarizer, ND filter, close-up filters and a couple of lens hoods. Invaluable accessories for all types of photography.

SanDisk Ultra 16GB MicroSDHC UHS-I Card

16GB SanDisk memory card. Shock-proof, magnet-proof, temperature-proof and waterproof. Unbreakable, in other words.

SanDisk Ultra 32GB microSDHC UHS-I Card

32 GB SanDisk memory card. Same qualities as the other one but with double the storage capacity.

Note: I own all this gear myself and use most of it regularly on national park outings. This post is not sponsored by anyone or any brand. I paid for all these items myself and simply want to share what I think is the most essential adventure travel gear you need for national park adventures.
