Plitvice Lakes National Park is a fantastic national park a couple of hours by car from the Dalmatian coast in Croatia. It is a unique place, home to several lakes located at various heights that flow into one another through series of gorgeous waterfalls. Its natural beauty is so overwhelming and rare that the park was declared World Heritage by UNESCO.
As stunning as the park may be, a thorough visit doesn’t take longer than a full day. It’s absolutely possible to walk around the lakes, go for a boat ride, and enjoy the scenery in the timespan of a long afternoon. It is, however, strongly recommended that you arrive early in the morning. It’s an enormously popular destination—tour buses arrive in mid-morning, its passengers quickly flooding the park.
Early morning is the absolute best time to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park. You’ll be able to enjoy some solitude, watch the sun rise over the ravine, and take advantage of the day’s greatest conditions for photography.
