American Craft Breweries: Queen City Brewing, Staunton, VA

There now are a handful of breweries in Staunton, Virginia, but Queen City Brewing is the oldest one. In fact, it distinguishes itself as the first brewery in Staunton since Prohibition. It was founded in 2003, way ahead of the craft beer hype that has now taken over America.

In its 10+ years, Queen City Brewing has brewed more than 80 beers and, currently, there are 22 brews on tap. Additionally, they also have their own homemade soda, hard-pressed apple ale and alcoholic ginger beer. There’s plenty of choice, in other words.

Unlike most other breweries in Virginia, Queen City doesn’t serve food—the only food you can get there are chips—but customers are invited to order delivery food or even bring in their own picnics.

What’s unquestionably cool about this particular craft brewery is that you can actually brew your own beer. The kettles and brewing equipment are the focal point of the taproom. They’re located right in the middle of it and, occasionally, you can see the brewer at work. If you want to try your hand at brewing, you can make a reservation on their website.

The admirable thing about Queen City Brewing is that it doesn’t seem to care about what it looks like. Housed in an old grocery store, it doesn’t look like much at first, but has an undeniable ambiance inside. The interior is minimalistic, the outdoor patio consisting of nothing more than a wooden terrace and simple metal tables and chairs.

I recommend getting a flight—the 12-sample clock flight is super-cool and a good reason to visit the brewery—and sampling a selection of their beers. My favorites were the Scottish Ale and, especially, the Milk Stout.

Queen City Brewing is open seven days a week. It’s located at 834 Springhill Road, just outside of the historic downtown district in Staunton.

And lastly, the service was great!
