5 Places to Explore America by Boat

If you’re looking to take a break from the National Parks of America and head out on the open waters, in a private boat, for instance a yacht or speedboat in order to explore some of the most beautiful shores of the USA this article is going to offer some destination inspiration to help inspire you plan the perfect trip.

The wonderful thing about sailing, is the freedom that accompanies it, of course this is presuming we are talking about renting a private boat or owning a yacht yourself, rather than going on a cruise – which is quite the opposite of “freedom” as everything is spoon fed and controlled.

Indeed, many a yachtsman couldn’t think of anything worse than an organised cruise on the basis they love nothing more than the sense of freedom, adventure and autonomy associated with sailing.

In that spirit, here are five of the less common places to explore america by boat that will give you a unique experience of the country – each recommendation offering a very different experience.

Boat in Florida, USA

Seattle, Washington

The great thing about this place, is that you can take to the water after a busy day at work on a warm summer evening where there’s no humidity, pleasant temperatures and light nights.  There’s an extended boating season along with a cool city that has a diverse culture and plenty of artsy events.

Charleston, South Carolina

Four million people visit this wonderful Southern gem, with its historic charm where old mansions line the harbor and the sound of horseshoes no cobbled streets echo throughout the town.  This is the place to slow down and enjoy a warm and friendly welcome, both on the water and in the town. A great time to visit is when the Charleston Bermuda Race is on.

Key West, Florida

Whether you’re looking for a solo adventure, or just want to dip your toes into ocean life on a booze filled sunset cruise, Key West has it all.  The calm and laid back vibe associated with the Caribbean, the tolerant and liberal scene that welcomes all visitors, and the exceptional food.  This is not necessarily the place to “get away from it all”, indeed, it’s more the place to mingle, people watch and party.

Miami, Florida

Miami, just up the road from Key West has a very different vibe, a much more upmarket atmosphere where people are keen to be seen – unless, you happen to be Dexter, the fictional vigilante that disposes of his victims from his boat.

If you are looking for a yacht charter Miami, there are some surprisingly reasonable options to be found, meaning you can fly in and pick up a boat once there. All three national parks near Miami (Biscayne, Everglades and Dry Tortugas) are fantastic boating destinations.

Greenport, New York

Long Island has two forks; Greenport is on the North with its fancier Hampton neighbors on the South.  Greenport is a less pretentious place with a vibrant fishing community that keeps the vibe much more real.  It’s a great place to visit for an unpretentious weekend to get out the city and enjoy the open water without the social pressure sometimes associated with the Hamptons.
