Zion National Park has announced its seasonal lottery dates to get an Angels Landing permit for 2024. This is a reminder that everyone who wants to hike Angels Landing in 2024 will need to have a permit.
“We’ve issued hundreds of thousands of permits to hike to Angels Landing since the program began in 2022,” Zion National Park Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh said. “Visitors and rangers report that the program has been successful at reducing crowding and congestion, and we are building on this success as we prepare for 2024.”
The Angels Landing Pilot Permit Program, as the system is officially called, is meant to reduce crowding on this ultra-popular trail—primarily by spreading out the start time of hikers throughout the day.
“This program is an important element of the National Park Service’s ongoing work to ensure park landscapes, plants, animals, and human history are conserved so that visitors can continue to enjoy this iconic destination,” the National Park Service said in a statement.
Since its implementation in 2022, Zion National Park rangers have observed, and hikers have reported, that there are noticeably fewer people and less congestion on the trail than in years prior to the permit program.
Additionally, while all hikers must now have an Angels Landing permit, the park has still been able “to accommodate more than 80% of the previous use NPS recorded in studies conducted in 2019 and 2021.”
