The Best National Park Snow-Related Adventures (Plus Where To Do Them)

Whether it’s the soft powdery stuff, or the more densely-packed variety,  playing in the snow can be a lot of fun. Of course, if you combine it with some adrenaline-fueled activities, in beautiful locations, you can have the time of your life.

Luckily, that is exactly the experience you can have in many of the national parks in the U.S. A topic you can read all about in the post below.

Snowshoeing on Hurricane Ridge, Olympic National Park, Washington

For Snowboarding – Olympic National Park, Washington

What could be more adventurous than heading out on the slopes of Hurricane Ridge for a spot of snowboarding? A spot that is nestled amid the stunning vista of Olympic National Park in Washington.

Now you may think that strapping a single board to your feet and pushing yourself down a mountain doesn’t sound like a lot of fun. However, millions of dedicated boarders think otherwise! Although, it is worth noting that you’ll need to excellent balance and coordination to master this art.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have a few lessons before you tackle the slopes either. In fact, learning how to stop, go, and get on the ski lift without doing yourself an injury is pretty essential.

Additionally, you will need the right equipment, to at least minimize the risk when speeding down a mountain. What that means is snow proof clothing to keep you warm, a helmet, and also a board that is the right size for you.

Although, happily, you can usually find a place that does snowboard rentals in the vicinity of the slopes. Something perfect for folks that don’t want to lug their boards all the way across the country to the best snowboarding spot.

For Snowmobiling – Acadia National Park, Maine

If snowboarding just hasn’t got enough oomph for you (!), then you may want to try your hand at snowmobiling instead? In fact, it’s a lot like snowboarding as there is a board or ski underneath the vehicle.

However, instead of relying on gravity you have anything up to a 1000 + cc engine in between your legs. Something that can make for an activity that is both equal parts exhilarating and terrifying!

Of course, if you are not put off by a little speed and risk, the best national park to try for snowmobiling is Acadia in Maine.

In fact, you will find that Maine generally is a fantastic place to snowmobile as there are tracks that crisscross the entire state. Something that means you can snowmobile from one side to the other uninterrupted.

For Husky Sleds – Denali National Park, Alaska

Finally, if its snow and excitement you are looking for, you don’t get much better than husky sledding? In fact, the dogs that pull these slides can get up to 14 mph, which let me tell you, feels even faster in the crisp, open air.

Head up to Denali National Park in Alaska if it’s a dog sledding thrill you are looking for. Oh, and I challenge you not to fall in love with the hardworking canines you will find up there!

Additionally, Denali National Park is also famous for its snowshoeing, winter wonderlands and epic northern lights viewing in America.
